Shift Left Testing

Quality at every stage. Resilience in every release. Flawless experiences every time.

What is shift left testing?

A defect found in production has already reached customers, while one found in a requirements review costs almost nothing to correct. Most programs still test late, when the code is complete and the release date is close.

Shift left testing moves verification earlier in the lifecycle. Requirements are reviewed for testability, unit and API tests run on every commit and quality gates stop a build that misses its criteria. It works alongside shift right testing, which verifies releases in production.

Services

What does shift left testing include?

Six practices move checking earlier, and each one is tied to a gate in the delivery pipeline.

Requirements and design review

Testers join refinement and design sessions, which brings ambiguous requirements and untestable designs to light before any code exists.

Unit and API testing

Unit, contract and API tests are written with the code and run on every commit.

Automation in the pipeline

Regression suites run on each build, using qRace for regression and API automation.

Quality gates

Each stage has pass criteria for coverage, defects and performance, and a build that misses them does not move on.

Early performance and security checks

Performance baselines on Compas and security scans run inside the pipeline, which brings non-functional defects to light while they are still cheap to fix.

Test data and environments

Virtualized environments and generated test data remove the waits that push testing to the end.

Quantifiable proof points

What results does shift left testing deliver?

Published engagements show how earlier testing appears in release speed, quality and automation.

70%

FAQs

Common questions about shift left testing

These answers cover what engineering and QA leaders ask us first.

What is shift left testing?

Shift left testing moves verification earlier in the lifecycle. Requirements are reviewed for testability, tests run on every commit and quality gates stop a weak build before it moves on.

How is shift left different from shift right?

Shift left tests earlier in development and shift right tests after release, in production. Programs need both, because a test environment cannot reproduce live traffic and data. Our Shift Right Testing service covers the second.

Does shift left replace manual testing?

It changes what testers do. Repeatable checks move into automation, and testers spend more time on exploratory testing, risk analysis and requirement review, where judgment matters most.

Where does AI fit in shift left testing?

AI can draft test cases from requirements and keep suites current as code changes. Engineers review what it produces, and the quality gates decide whether a build moves on.

How do you measure shift left testing?

Common measures are the share of defects found before system testing, the number of defects that escape to production, build pass rates at each gate and the time a defect takes to fix. We agree the baseline in the first weeks.
